Moneyrow Beans is proud to be the UK Distributor for Gorilla Conservation Coffee, a social enterprise which supports coffee farmers in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda as part of Conservation Through Public Health programme.
Uganda is home to half of the remaining estimated 1,063 mountain gorillas alive today, but struggling for tomorrow.
The coffee is named after Kanyonyi, the former lead silverback of Mubare gorilla family living in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
In October 2022, Moneyrow Beans visited Gorilla Conservation Coffee in Uganda:
Gorilla Conservation Coffee is a social enterprise of Ugandan NGO, Conservation Through Public Health. We met with the CTPH founders –Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka and her husband Lawrence Zikusoka – to understand more about the important work that they do and how coffee supports this.
Gorilla Conservation Coffee have a café in Entebbe, serving great coffee (!) and delicious food. It’s also packed with information about how the coffee contributes towards the protection of Uganda’s gorilla population.
In a village on the edge of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, CTPH have a camp and research centre. Here the team carry out research & monitoring of the gorilla population and work with the local communities around education, health and alternative livelihoods.
The Gorilla Conservation Camp also has rooms available to stay in and Gorilla Tracking can be arranged. The income from this contributes towards CTPH’s work. The views from the camp are breath-taking.
Nearly half the worlds’ population of mountain gorillas live in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, an area now protected as a World Heritage Site.
Seeing the gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest underlined to us the importance of the work that CTPH is doing and made us proud to play our small part in it.
Meeting Gorilla Conservation Coffee Farmers allowed us to understand the importance of giving livelihoods to the communities living on the edge of the forest. GCC pays over the market rate for the beans it buys from its farmers.
Here’s the edge of the forest, surrounded by farmland. Without protection the forest would have been damaged further and the gorillas’ habitat destroyed.
GCC helps farmers with training and equipment to ensure they are growing quality coffee with high yields. This is a de-pulping machine that was donated to this farm.
It was fascinating to see the journey the beans take from picking, de-pulping, drying and packing. The care taken to ensure the best quality beans are used for Gorilla Conservation Coffee was inspiring.
As well as coffee, many other crops are grown in Uganda including tea, rice, bananas, casava, herbs and spices.
Moneyrow Beans are the sole distributor of Gorilla Conservation Coffee in the UK. We import the green beans directly from GCC in Uganda and roast them in our roastery in Berkshire. £1 is donated to CTPH for every 250g of coffee purchased.
Conservation Through Public Health
Gorilla Conservation Coffee is an award-winning social enterprise of Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) in Uganda. Gorilla Conservation Coffee pays a premium price to coffee farmers living next to the gorillas around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Supporting local farmers helps to protect the endangered mountain gorillas and their fragile habitat.
Conservation Through Public Health works with Uganda Wildlife Authority, local communities and other organisations to improve education, healthcare and livelihoods, so that humans and mountain gorillas – like Kanyonyi and his family – can coexist
