Introducing Plum Judy! Inspired by a butterfly in India where this coffee comes from…

This coffee comes from the Hospura Estate which is situated in the Bab Budan Giri coffee growing area of India. The farm itself is 12 hectares, and is known for its biodiversity and traditional cultivation methods.

Our recent interest in butterfly conservation inspired us to look at butterflies at origin, and through our partners at Osito Coffee we learned about producers in this region of India counting butterflies and using their findings as a measure of the success of their sustainable farming practices.

From the list of 68 butterfly species being counted, we wanted to name this coffee after one of them and we chose Plum Judy (aka abisara echerius) because when we first tasted this coffee we noticed a delicious plum flavour so that’s where the name comes from!

Coffee is grown here under rich polyculture shade canopy, featuring a wide range of native species. The environment provides a vital habitat for birds (including the Nilgiri Flowerpecker, the Blyths Starling and the Malabar Parakeet). What’s more vulnerable mammal like the Spotted Deer and Flying Squirrel are to be found on the Estate.

The farm itself is managed by Zuheb Abrar and he grows exclusively S795 and Chandragiri varieties. Haring studied Civil Engineering, Zuheb decided he would rather work in coffee on the farm and to try to develop the farms potential as a wild life sanctuary.
